Tasmania is an island state in Australia, just south of Melbourne. This is also where you will find the popular Looney Tunes Tasmanian Devil (am I dating myself too much??) Unfortunately or fortunately, the real thing looks NOTHING like the popular cartoon character but rather like a giant rat. If you don’t get to see one in real life it’s honestly for the best!
Even with this little devil wandering around, Tasmania is honestly my favorite place in Australia. The island is by no means small as it is around the size of Florida.
Here you will find everything from tons of National Parks, wineries, beaches, breweries and of course everything you could possibly need in Hobart. You can even take a cruise to Antartica departing from Tasmania, which is just WILD.
Depending on how much time you have you could easily spend a weekend or two weeks exploring and hiking all the National Parks the island has to offer.
By far our favorite is Freycinet National Park. I actually visited this park in college and knew I had to return one day. The Wineglass Bay lookout is just breath taking.
The hike up to the look out point is about an hour and a half round trip. It can be hot and the trail is steep so bring plenty of water! There are longer hikes that can bring you to Hazards Beach which can take about 4 hours round trip. If you have the time definitely recommend continuing on to the beach!
The park is just 2.5 hours from Hobart. We of course recommend getting a rental car for this but there are many tour options too if you don’t want to drive on the left side of the road.
You’ll need to get either a vehicle national park pass or an individual pass. If you are spending more than a day exploring Tasmania National Parks it may make sense to upgrade and purchase the Holiday National Park pass instead which is valid for 2 months. The island state has so many to visit this may be the way to go!
